Eric Overmyer est un auteur et producteur américain né le 25 septembre 1951 à Boulder dans le Colorado. Il a écrit et/ou produit de nombreuses séries : Hôpital St Elsewhere, Homicide, The Wire, New Amsterdam et Treme.
Il a contribué à la quatrième saison de The Wire au côté de David Simon avec qui il avait déjà travaillé sur Homicide.
Il collabore de nouveau avec David Simon pour l'écriture et la production d'une nouvelle série dramatique sur HBO, Treme. Celle-ci traite de La Nouvelle-Orléans post-ouragan Katrina à travers une douzaine de personnages principaux. Les mêmes principes que pour ces précédentes série sont adoptés avec le souci du réalisme et la volonté de retranscrire une réalité sociale de façon non manichéenne.
