Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) est un mento jamaïcain. La version la plus connue de cette chanson est celle interprétée par Harry Belafonte. Elle est souvent citée comme exemple de calypso même si le mento et la calypso sont deux styles distincts. La chanson évoque des dockers déchargeant de nuit des bananes d'un bateau — le jour arrive, le travail est terminé et les hommes veulent que les comptes soient faits pour pouvoir rentrer chez eux.
Origines
Cette chanson est à l'origine une chanson populaire jamaïcaine.
Le premier enregistrement est celui du chanteur de Trinidad Edric Connor avec son groupe « The Caribbeans » en 1952, sur l'album Songs from Jamaica ; la chanson s'y appelle Day De Light[1]. Elle est aussi enregistrée par le chanteur folk jamaïcain Louise Bennett en 1954.
En 1956, Irving Burgie et William Attaway écrivent une version des paroles, version enregistrée la même année par Harry Belafonte. Cette version est la plus connue et a été no 5 dans le classement du Billboard en 1957. Elle est devenue la chanson-phare de Harry Belafonte.
