Zhang Zhong est un nom asiatique ; le nom de famille, Zhang, précède donc le prénom.

Zhang Zhong (né le 5 septembre 1978 à Chongqing[1] est un grand maître international (GM) chinois du jeu d'échecs. Il a épousé la GM féminin Li Ruofan[2],[3].

Parmi ses résultats remarquables, on peut citer sa médaille d'argent au Championnat du monde d'échecs junior en 1998 (derrière Darmen Sadvakasov), sa première place en 2001 au championnat chinois, son score de 8,5/12 à l'Olympiade d'échecs de 2002 à Bled, et sa 1re place avec 11/13 au tournoi B de Wijk aan Zee 2003, à trois points du 2e, et qui le qualifie pour le prestigieux tournoi A de l'année suivante où il marque 5/13. Il remporte le championnat asiatique 2005 qui le qualifie pour la World Cup de la Fédération internationale des échecs, où il gagne contre Mikhail Kobalia au premier tour, et est éliminé au suivant par Ivan Sokolov.

Il joue aujourd'hui pour Singapour.

Zhang joue presque exclusivement 1.e4 avec les Blancs. Avec les Noirs, il emploie la défense sicilienne et la partie espagnole contre 1.e4 et contre 1.d4 il choisit la défense nimzo-indienne, la défense ouest-indienne ou même la défense hollandaise.

En avril 2008, il a 2613 points au Classement Elo.
