Le terme zanj, zandj, zenj, ou Zendj voire Zinj selon la translittération vient du persan (زنگبار Zangi-bar signifiant depuis l'Antiquité, la "Côte des Noirs", ou de l'arabe Zanj[1]. Zingium est la translittération latine. Zenj
Il peut désigner :
- Les habitants de la côte est de l'Afrique, près de l'Océan Indien. Il va, par extension, désigner les noirs emmenés en esclavage.
- Voir la Révolte des Zanj.
- Voir l'histoire de Java sur la présence d'esclaves jenggi, c'est-à-dire "zenji", à Java ou offerts à la cour de Chine aux IXe et Xe siècles.
- L'aire territoriale sur laquelle s'étend la culture swahilie.
- L'aire territoriale dominée par le sultan de Zanzibar au XVIIIe siècle.
- Le terme désignait également le gingembre[2] que les marchands arabes allaient chercher dans l'île de Zanzibar.
