Le X-country, ou plus communément appelé cross-country, (ou aussi XC pour X-Country , le X ayant la forme d'une croix, ou cross en anglais) est la pratique du VTT sur tous les terrains.
C'est effectivement la discipline du VTT qui est la plus répandue et la seule présente aux Jeux olympiques.
Le x-country est le plus souvent pratiqué avec un VTT semi-rigide (c’est-à-dire un vélo avec une fourche télescopique sans suspension à l'arrière) car l'amortisseur absorbe une quantité importante de l'effort de traction lors du pédalage (phénomène appelé "pompage"), contrairement à un VTT semi-rigide. Toutefois, l'utilisation d'un VTT tout-suspendu se démocratise même en compétition de x-country, car le gain d'adhérence, et donc de motricité que procure la suspension arrière peut compenser cette perte.
Le x-country peut-être pratiqué tout au long de l'année, par n'importe quel temps.
