Environnement de pré-installation Windows

L'environnement de pré-installation Windows (Windows preinstallation environment ou Windows PE ou Win PE) est une sorte de système d'exploitation miniature permettant d'effectuer des opérations sur une machine ne possédant pas encore de système d'exploitation installé.

On pourrait concevoir Windows PE comme le successeur de MS-DOS pour pouvoir démarrer une machine afin d'effectuer les opérations de maintenance en vue de l'installation d'un nouveau système d'exploitation (destruction des partitions existantes, formatage, re-création des partitions, etc.).

Avant la version 2.0, WinPE était distribué uniquement aux grands assembleurs et aux grandes sociétés ayant à gérer des parcs informatiques. Désormais, WinPE 2.0 est accessible à tout le monde (y compris aux petites entreprises et au particulier).

On doit posséder un exemplaire de Win PE sur un liveCD, ou accessible via le réseau (touche F8, F12 ou Echap au démarrage pour accéder au menu de boot), pour pouvoir lancer l'environnement.

Construite à partir de Windows XP Professionnel avec le Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Windows PE 2005 (1.6)

Construite à partir de Windows Server 2003 avec le Service Pack 1 (SP1).

Windows PE 2.0

S'appuie sur la technologie Microsoft Windows Vista. WinPE 2.0 est intégré au kit d’installation Windows automatisée (Windows AIK). Ce kit est librement téléchargeable sur le site Internet de Microsoft.

Windows PE 2.1

Construite à partir de Windows Server 2008, même code que Windows Vista avec le Service Pack 1 (SP1).
