Very Large Telescope Interferometer

Le Very Large Telescope Interferometer est un des modes de fonctionnement des télescopes du VLT.

Dans ce mode de fonctionnement, les faisceaux de 2 ou 3 UTs sont combinés ensemble pour former une image dont la résolution angulaire est égale à celle qu’aurait un télescope dont le diamètre est la distance entre les télescopes les plus éloignés. Ce mode permet donc d’atteindre des résolutions très élevées, à même de permettre la mesure du diamètre angulaire des étoiles, étant donné que le télescope ainsi reconstitué peut avoir un diamètre de 120 m.

Actuellement, l’instrument AMBER permet d'utiliser 3 UTs simultanément, l'instrument MIDI permet d'utiliser 2 UTs et l'instrument visiteur PIONIER permet d'utiliser 4 UTs. Des instruments de génération suivante sont en cours d'etude et de réalisation.
