La Force des Nations unies chargée d'observer le dégagement (FNUOD) a été créée en 1974. Israël et la Syrie s'étaient alors engagés à démilitariser le plateau du Golan, par l'Accord sur le dégagement des forces israéliennes et syriennes. Par sa Résolution 350 (1974), le Conseil de sécurité des Nations unies entend ainsi faire respecter cet accord ainsi que la zone de séparation et de limitation d'armes situé sur les hauteurs du Golan.
Le Quartier général de la FNUOD est situé à Camp Faouar. Le Commandant de la Force est depuis le 17 janvier 2007 le Général-Major Wolfgang Jilke (Autriche). En tout, les effectifs atteignent 1064 personnes, au 31 octobre 2006, répartis entre soldats (1247), observateurs militaires de l'ONUST (57) et personnel civil international (35) et local (107). Entre 1974 et 2008, 42 militaires ainsi qu'un civil dépendant de l'ONU ont perdu la vie au cours de cette mission.
La majorité des soldats du bataillon de logistique de la FNUOD sont des Canadiens et le reste, des Japonais.
L'Autriche et la Pologne ont chacune affecté un bataillon d'infanterie pour exécuter des patrouilles et observer la zone de séparation entre les deux pays en conflit. La Croatie participe également à la mission, sa compagnie de soldats faisant partie du bataillon autrichien.
