Les Quatre Étapes de la cruauté (The Four Stages of Cruelty) est une série de quatre gravures réalisées en 1751 par le peintre et graveur anglais William Hogarth. Les gravures décrivent le parcours de Tom Nero, un tortionnaire d'animaux, de son enfance cruelle à sa fin tragique : son exécution en tant que meurtrier et sa dissection. La première gravure, Première étape de la cruauté (First stage of cruelty), décrit, Tom Nero enfant torturant un chien. Il est ensuite dépeint adulte, frappant un cheval dans Seconde étape de la cruauté (Second stage of cruelty), et volant, séduisant et tuant dans la troisième gravure, Cruelty in perfection. Dans la dernière scène, intitulée The reward of cruelty, Nero, condamné à mort, est tiré de la potence pour être disséqué par des chirurgiens dans une salle d'anatomie.

William Hogarth cherchait avant tout à faire passer à travers ses gravures un message moral, lui-même choqué par les actes de cruauté courants dont il était témoin dans les rues de Londres, et voulant selon lui « faire prendre conscience aux gens que tous leurs actes ont leurs conséquences »[1]. Publiées sur du papier bon marché, les gravures étaient destinées aux classes populaires. Celles-ci montrent une brutalité extrême au regard de la légèreté et des touches d'humour de ses autres travaux qu'il jugea nécessaire afin que son message impressionne le public. Néanmoins, le souci du détail, l'exagération des expressions, les références subtiles caractéristiques du talent de Hogart sont présentes sur ces œuvres.
