Svend Foyn (1809–1894) était un Norvégien originaire de Tønsberg qui instigua la chasse industrielle de la baleine. En 1864, il embarqua sur le premier baleinier à vapeur, le Spes et Fides (Espoir et Foi), avec sept canons-harpons de sa propre création.
