Sveagruva est le troisième lieu le plus habité du Svalbard après Longyearbyen et Ny-Ålesund. Sveagruva compte environ 200 habitants. Son nom vient de svea qui renvoie à Sverige (Suède) et de gruve qui signifie : mine de charbon en norvégien.
Située au sud de l'île du Spitzberg, ce sont des Suédois qui en 1910 s'y installèrent en premier. Aujourd'hui, une partie de la mine de charbon est toujours exploitée.
La desserte de la cité est assurée par un petit avion en provenance de Longyearbyen, qui vole lorsque les conditions sont favorables, ou bien par "chenillette".
