Art and Language

Art and Language est un collectif anglais qui va dans le même sens que l'art conceptuel mais qui n'utilise pas la même procédure, la même analyse. Leur procédure s'appelle l'heuristique (système qui pense ses propres règles).

Ils étaient quatre au départ, dans les années 1970 ils sont une trentaine. Le groupe Art and Language utilise le langage car c'est à travers lui que se construisent les idées, les concepts qui dominent un moment de l'histoire. Développer un système théorique dans lequel les concepts couramment employés pour définir l'art sont mis en relation et analysés en fonction du concept art tel qu'il est défini jusque là. Cela permet de répertorier les mots qui apparaissent, disparaissent, ceux qui persistent. Analyser l'évolution des mots à travers les diverses définitions proposées.

Le collectif démontre qu'il existe une hiérarchie entre les termes. Cela leur permet d'établir une sorte de carte marquant les liens entre les concepts et d'indiquer les termes qui dominent. Au cours de leur enquête on voit que l'objet d'art domine. Ils vont se réferer à la structure de penser d'autres disciplines ainsi que le vocabulaire (analytique, pragmatique, linguistique, structuralisme, sociologie des sciences), théorie de la communication (cybernétique), l'anthropologie.
