Un métallophone est un type d'instrument à lames de métal, qui se rapproche du vibraphone, du xylophone et du gamelan.
Le compositeur Carl Orff et son ami luthier, Klaus Becker, vont développer cet instrument au sein de la société studio 49, afin de l'adapter aux enfants. Cet instrument fait à présent partie intégrante de la pédagogie musicale active le Orff-Schulwerk.
En France cet instrument a été rendu célèbre grâce au jeu des mille francs dont il rythme en fond sonore, le temps de réponse aux questions.
