La divinité

Dans l'hindouisme, Jagannâtha, « Seigneur de l'Univers » (de jagat, le monde, l'univers et nâtha, seigneur) est le nom donné à Krishna lorsqu'il est considéré comme la divinité suprême. La divinité, représentée en noir, car c'est la couleur et le nom même de Krishna, est souvent accompagnée par son frère Balabhadra, en blanc, et sa sœur Subhadrâ, en jaune.

La statue-reliquaire de Jagannâtha à Puri

Un des lieux les plus saints de l'Inde est le temple de Jagannâtha à Puri, dont la principale statue de culte est supposée contenir les reliques de Krishna.

Cette statue, plus ancienne que le temple lui-même, est un morceau de bois assez grossier. Selon la légende, les ossements de Krishna furent recueillis par de pieuses personnes. Vishvakarma, à la demande d'Indra ou de Vishnu, aurait commencé à lui sculpter un reliquaire mais, dérangé dans sa tâche, il aurait laissé la sculpture à l'état d'ébauche.

En anglais, Jagannâtha est à l'origine du mot "juggernaut" qui signifie instoppable.
