Glenda May Jackson est une comédienne britannique née le 9 mai 1936, deux fois lauréate de l'Oscar de la meilleure actrice. Elle a été décorée par l'Ordre de l'Empire britannique en 1978. Dans les années 1990, elle a entamé une carrière politique et siège actuellement pour le compte du parti travailliste dans la circonscription électorale de Hampstead and Highgate, située dans le district londonien de Camden.

Vie personnelle

Jackson est née à Birkenhead, The Wirral, dans le Cheshire, au sein d'une famille ouvrière. Elle s'est d'abord destinée un emploi de préparatrice en pharmacie. Elle a un fils de son ex-mari, Roy Hodges, qu'elle avait épousé à 22 ans.

Carrière d'actrice

A 18 ans, elle entre à la Royal Academy of Dramatic Art et fait ses débuts sur scène dans Separate Tables de Terence Rattigan en 1957, puis au cinéma dans This sporting Life de Lindsay Anderson en 1963. Elle collabore également avec Peter Brook sur Marat-Sade, interprétant Charlotte Corday .

Actrice de théâtre très réputée, elle accède à la célébrité internationale grâce à deux rôles dans des films de Ken Russell : celui de Gudrun Brangwen, l'artiste-sculptrice émancipée de Love (Women in Love, adapté du roman de D.H Lawrence) qui lui vaut son premier Oscar en 1971, et celui d'Antonina Milyukova, l'épouse nymphomane du compositeur Tchaikovsky dans La Symphonie pathétique (The Music Lovers, 1970). Au début des années 1970, elle apparaît dans quelques sketches de l'émission de Morecambe and Wise pour la BBC montrant ainsi son envie de s'illustrer dans le registre comique. Au cinéma, elle confirme son passage à la comédie avec Une maîtresse dans les bras, une femme sur le dos (A Touch of class, 1973) de Melvin Frank; film pour lequel elle remporte un deuxième Oscar.

Elle est également connue pour avoir donné des interprétations mémorables d'Hedda Gabler, d'Elisabeth I et de Sarah Bernhardt.

Elle prend sa retraite en tant qu'actrice en 1992 afin de se consacrer à sa carrière politique.

Carrière politique

Depuis 1992, elle siège à la Chambre des Communes pour le compte du parti travailliste. Elle a très souvent accordé un indéfectible soutien à Ken Livingstone. La presse a beaucoup spéculé sur son nom pour remplacer Tony Blair lorsque celui-ci a annoncé son désir de partir en 2006. Mais Jackson a vite mis fin à ces rumeurs.
