Cynthia

Cynthia est un prénom d'origine grecque dérivé du prénom Jacinthe. Cynthia est également un prénom latin qui vient de Cynthie.

Étymologiquement, Cynthia vient du mot grec kynthios signifiant « qui vient du Kynthos ». En effet en Grèce, sur l'île de Délos, se trouve le mont Kynthos, lieu mythique où seraient nés la déesse Artémis et son frère Apollon. De ce fait, Artémis est parfois appelée Cynthia[1].

Pendant la Renaissance et le Baroque, c'est l'un des noms les plus habituels de la Lune, autant dans la poésie et le théâtre (Shakespeare) que dans l'astronomie (Galilée). C'est à partir de ce moment qu'il a commencé à être utilisé comme prénom, comme d'autres références mythologiques : Diane, Cassandre, Hercule, etc.

Cynthia est un prénom d'origine américaine, espagnole (Cinthia), française, et italienne où celui-ci s'écrit Cinzia.

Ce prénom est assez bien répandu en France ainsi qu'en Amérique.

La fête est célébrée le 9 juin[2], localement le 30 janvier[3].
