L'Ipeca, Ipéca ou Ipécacuana (du portugais ipecacuanha, du tupi Ygpecaya) est un sous-arbrisseau, sauvage et cultivé, des vallées forestières humides d'Amérique du Sud de la famille des Rubiaceae. Sa racine est de saveur acre et nauséabonde.

Son nom scientifique est Carapichea ipecacuanha depuis 2002.

Utilisation

La racine de l'ipécacuana contient des alcaloïdes et a des propriétés expectorantes et vomitives.

Il a été découvert en Amérique par Christophe Colomb. Sa racine contient de l'émétine en grande quantité, responsable des propriétés émétisantes (vomissement). Actuellement, ces racines sont encore utilisées, surtout à l'hôpital où elles sont préparées magistralement. Elles sont indiquées dans certaines intoxications aigues afin d'aider le malade à vider son estomac.

Règlementation

Le sirop d'ipéca a été retiré de la vente en France. Il est toutefois disponible sans ordonnance au Canada.
