Betye Saar

Betye Irène Saar (30 juillet 1926, à Los Angeles) est une artiste américaine, connue pour ses travaux dans le domaine de l'assemblage.

Après son diplôme en design à l'université de Californie, à Los Angeles, en 1949, elle obtient un second diplôme en imprimerie puis en éducation au lycée de la ville de Passadena, et à L'université de l'État de Californie, à Long beach.

Son intérêt pour les assemblages provient d'une exposition de Joseph Cornell qu'elle a vu en 1968. Elle cite également les influences des Watts Towers de Simon Rodia dont elle a été témoin de la construction durant son enfance. Elle a commencé son travail en créant des boites ou des fenêtres, noyant des objets de différentes cultures, rappelant son propre héritage (Africaine, Indienne, Créole, et Irlandaise).
