May Chiu

May Chiu (née en 1965) est une femme politique sino-canadienne.

Militante communautaire et militante des droits sociaux, May Chiu est avocate de formation. Directrice générale du cercle du Service à la Famille Chinoise jusqu'en 2006, elle se fait connaître lors des élections fédérales de 2006.

En effet, c'est à cette occasion que le Bloc québécois l'investie dans la circonscription de LaSalle—Émard. Son adversaire est l'ancien premier ministre du Canada, Paul Martin. Elle est fréquemment citée par les médias, d'une part parce qu'elle est la première québécoise d'origine chinoise à avoir été candidate aux élection fédérale canadienne, mais surtout parce qu'elle porte cette candidature alors qu'elles est dans ses derniers mois mois de grossesses. Elle accouchera d'ailleurs quelques jours avant l'élection, dont elle termine deuxième avec 28.64% des votes exprimés.

Elle perpétue son engagement politique en participant à la fondation de Québec Solidaire, dont elle sera la candidate dans Outremont à l'occasion des élections générales de 2008[1]. La circonscription inclut le quartier très populaire de Côte-des-Neiges, dont les habitants votent généralement peu, May Chiu fait de ce quartier une de ses zones prioritaires[2]. A l'issue de ce scrutin elle termine troisième, obtenant 11,4% des votes.
