L’université de Saint Andrews, sur la côte ouest de l'Écosse, a été fondée au début du XVe siècle. C'est la troisième plus ancienne du monde anglophone après celles d'Oxford et de Cambridge. Elle compte aujourd'hui 7 000 étudiants de nombreuses nationalités.

Le 5 septembre 2007, le dalaï-lama a apporté son soutien à un projet de recherche important de cette université, qui explorera le rapport étroit entre la religion et la politique au Tibet et sera focalisé sur le bouddhisme tibétain entre 1931 et les premières années du XXIe siècle. Le projet est considéré comme le plus grand projet historique dans le monde sur le sujet, et sera mené par Mario Aguilar.[1] Le prince William de Galles y a notamment étudié l'histoire de l'art.
