Thomas Gregson

Thomas George Gregson (1798 – 4 janvier 1874) fut le second Premier ministre de Tasmanie du 26 février 1857 au 25 avril 1857.

Gregson est né à Durham en Angleterre en 1798 et s'installa dans l'actuelle Tasmanie) en 1821 où il acheta une grande propriété.

En juillet 1842 il devint membre du "Tasmanian Legislative Council" et trois ans plus tard devint chef de l'opposition au gouverneur, Sir Eardley-Wilmot dans sa tentative d'augmenter les impôts. En 1856 lorsqu'un gouvernement fut créé, il fut élu député. Le 14 février 1857 Gregson fit voter une loi pour faire baisser les salaires des hauts-fonctionnaires de la colonie (Gouverneur, administrateur colonial, etc..) provoquant la démission de William Champ et sa nomination comme Premier Ministre mais il fut incapable d'occuper le poste manquant de modération, de self-contrôle et de tact et son gouvernement fut renversé huit semaines plus tard.

Il quitta le Parlement peu avant sa mort le 4 janvier 1874.
