The Day the Music Died (Le jour où la musique est morte) fait référence au 3 février 1959, le jour où un écrasement d'avion tua trois musiciens populaires du Rock 'n' roll américain : Buddy Holly (Charles Hardin Holley - ° 7 septembre 1936), The Big Bopper, (Jiles Perry Richardson - ° 24 octobre 1930) et Ritchie Valens (° 13 mai 1941). Tôt le matin, à environ 1:05 heure du Centre, un Beechcraft Bonanza transportant les trois musiciens s'écrase dans un champ alors qu'il était en route pour un concert près de Fargo (Dakota du Nord), tuant les trois musiciens ainsi que le pilote Roger Peterson.

Dans la culture populaire américaine, ce jour est désigné comme The Day The Music Died (Le jour où la musique est morte) d'après les paroles de la chanson American Pie de Don MacLean.
