American Idiot (en français « Idiot américain »), sorti en 2004, est le septième album studio de Green Day et son premier opéra rock.

L'album devint cinq fois disque de platine aux États-Unis. Le groupe n'avait plus connu un tel succès depuis Dookie. American Idiot fut nommé sept fois au Grammy Awards et remporta celui de « Meilleur album Rock » en 2005. Il s'est vendu à 15 millions d'exemplaires dans le monde. Le magazine Kerrang l'a nommé « Meilleur album du 21éme siècle » en 2009

Structure

Bien que des problèmes politiques soit abordés, comme le ressentiment de Green Day envers George W. Bush, le thème principal de l'album est la nature de la rébellion. On suit la vie d'un personnage principal, Jesus of Suburbia (littéralement « Jésus de Banlieue »), qui doit choisir entre trouver ce en quoi il croit et se battre pour, ou l'auto-destruction.

L'histoire commence avec la présentation de Jesus of Suburbia qui sort de sa banlieue natale pour aller en ville (Jesus of Suburbia). Mais il découvre que la vie urbaine n'est pas si facile (City of The Damned). Il va y rencontrer ses compagnons d'infortune comme St. Jimmy (St. Jimmy) qui mourra (The Death of St. Jimmy) et Whatsername (She's a Rebel) qui retournera à New York, d'où elle vient (Whatsername). Au passage, il rencontre l'intolérance (Holiday), la drogue (Give Me Novacaine), la solitude (Boulevard of Broken Dreams) et le sexe (Extraordinary Girl) avant de rentrer dans sa banlieue (We're Coming Home Again).
